Nanaimo Unique Kids Organization
In January of 2005, four families realized that the normal school system
wasn’t working for their children. Instead of complaining to the world,
they decided to work with the school system to create a special school
that would work for them. They call themselves the Nanaimo Unique Kids
Organization (N.U.K.O.)... <MORE> |

Park Avenue School
I just received 24 Hidden Heroes stories from students in Mrs.
McGonigle’s Grade 7 class at Park Avenue School. We all have much to
learn from the insights these students have had. I’ve selected three
stories for this week and I’ll have more next week. I know you’ll enjoy
hearing from these budding story tellers...

One of the key messages in the school-based Hidden Heroes Education

Small Communities Can Make a Big Difference
As I have said many times before in this column, we are all surrounded
by Hidden Heroes but unfortunately we often tend not to notice them
because we have become a society of "fixers". We tend to look for what's
wrong and try to fix it, instead of focusing on what's right and
building upon those strengths... <MORE> |

now his future is looking much brighter thanks to the efforts of his

Uplands Park PAC who, along with the principal, Marie Harel,
enthusiastically supported a pilot "Rec and Read" summer program and
worked hard to bring a pilot version of this three week reading
intervention program to Grade two and three students in the school... <MORE> |

Christmas seems to have snuck up on me this year but last week I was
reminded that it was coming, and coming soon. I got a last minute phone
call from a friend asking me to play Santa Clause and faster than I
could say "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer," I found myself wearing the
famous red costume along with knee length black rubber boots and a mouth
full of white cotton as I prepared to have my picture taken with
business people across the city... <MORE> |

have in common with the people who were featured... <MORE> |
