Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver Island Pilot Hidden Heroes Activities
In the spring of 2009, Hidden Heroes Education Society partnered with the Boys and Girls Club in Nanaimo to deliver a series of hour-long activities introducing kids to the Our Hidden Heroes program.
The pilot was delivered to a dozen youth, 9 to 12 years old, in the after-school program. The goal was to create an activity guide that can be delivered by Boys and Girls Club staff across Canada. This guide is being printed and may be of interest to other youth groups like Scouts or Guides. The new activity guide is based on the Our Hidden Heroes school program, but is more recreational in focus. The Hidden Heroes lessons provide an excellent way for the Boys and Girls Club to fulfill their mandate of providing a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.
The Our Hidden Heroes program motivates students, youth and adults to seek out and study the Hidden Heroes (positive role models) in their families, communities and schools, and then to identify and activate the Hidden Hero that lies within each one of them. In this way they learn that it’s not the one in a million super heroes that truly make a difference in this world, it’s the millions of Hidden Heroes, ordinary people like them who are consistently doing small positive things to make a difference.
At the end of the program, the Boys and Girls Club students nominated a former leader, Leesa, to be acknowledged on their Hidden Heroes Wall of Fame. Leesa was presented with a certificate by many students who were proud to celebrate what they learned.
